Strut bearing failure: the noise most people misdiagnose
A knocking or creaking noise on full lock, or a grinding sensation through the steering wheel when turning, is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed suspension symptoms. Most drivers — and some workshops — replace the shock absorber when the actual fault is the strut bearing (also called the strut top mount or strut support bearing). This guide explains how to tell a bearing failure from a damper problem, what a failed spring sounds like, and what to do in each case.

What the strut bearing does — and how it fails
The strut bearing sits at the top of the MacPherson strut assembly, between the strut and the car's body. It has two jobs: to allow the strut to rotate with the steering (so the wheel can turn without the spring binding), and to isolate vibration and noise from reaching the car body.
When the bearing fails, it typically does so in one of three ways:
- Race collapse: The steel bearing races wear or collapse. The strut still rotates but with friction and noise. On full lock, the strut has to turn furthest and the noise is loudest — this is why the knock appears specifically on full lock.
- Rubber isolator failure: The rubber pad between the bearing and the body hardens, cracks, or separates. This causes a creaking noise that is temperature-sensitive (worse in cold weather) and can temporarily be silenced with lubricant.
- Seizure: The bearing locks entirely. The strut can no longer rotate, so when the steering turns, the spring is wound up and then releases sharply — causing a loud clunk. This also puts lateral stress on the steering rack.
How to self-diagnose a strut bearing
- With the car on the ground (full weight on the suspension), have an assistant turn the steering wheel from lock to lock at slow speed.
- Stand by the front corner of the car with your hand on the top of the strut housing (the dome visible under the bonnet).
- Listen and feel for a creak, knock, or grinding sensation as the wheel turns. A functional bearing is silent — you can feel the strut rotating smoothly.
- Check the adjacent bonnet area: rubber residue or cracking around the top mount dome indicates the isolator is failing.
If you hear noise on full lock that is absent when driving straight, the strut bearing is the primary suspect.

When to replace the bearing — and what to replace at the same time
Replace the strut bearing whenever the damper is replaced. The strut must be disassembled to replace the damper on a MacPherson strut, so the bearing is accessible with no additional labour. Fitting a new damper and leaving a worn bearing in place is a common false economy — the bearing will need replacing in a separate job shortly after, at full labour cost again.
If the spring shows any cracks, chips to the coating, or unusual height loss on one side, replace it at the same time. Springs are cheap relative to the labour of a second strut disassembly.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the knocking sound always from the strut bearing, or could it be the damper?
- A knock specifically on full steering lock, or when the wheel is turned at low speed on the spot, is almost always the strut bearing — the turning motion loads the bearing and exposes its wear. A knock on straight-ahead bumps (no steering input) is more likely the damper bump stop or the damper itself. Both can be present simultaneously on a high-mileage car.
- Can I drive on a failed strut bearing?
- Short distances, cautiously. A partially failed bearing (noise only, no seizure) reduces handling precision but does not immediately immobilise the car. A seized bearing prevents the wheel from turning freely, which is dangerous — the steering becomes heavy and imprecise. Do not drive on a seized bearing.
- Does the strut bearing need to be replaced in pairs?
- It is good practice to replace both fronts together, as the opposite bearing is typically of similar age and condition. If one front has failed, the other is often close. Replacing in pairs also ensures consistent steering feel and noise levels across both sides.
- How do I know if the noise is the spring rather than the bearing?
- Spring creak is typically present during slow manoeuvring, may be worse in cold weather, and sometimes stops when weight is off the suspension. A failed bearing knocks specifically on steering lock — the spring creaks in a different part of the steering arc. Applying silicone lubricant to the lower spring seat and upper spring pad (not the bearing itself) can isolate the source: if the noise stops for a day or two, the source is the spring seat interface.
- My car failed its MOT / roadworthiness test for a strut bearing. What does that mean?
- A failed bearing can cause excess play in the steering, which is grounds for failure in most European roadworthiness tests. Replace the bearing and retest — it is a straightforward job in most workshops and takes less than an hour per corner.
